Petition to Council on waste water charges

Peoples Choice to petition Council on waste water charges

Peoples Choice has started a petition to reduce waste water charges for low water users.

Peoples Choice Chairman Hamish Stevens said it’s time the Manukau City Council woke up to what’s going on.

It needs to take notice of the many residential and business property owners who have been stung with excessive waste water charges.

“We have started a petition which will be presented to the Manukau City Council before Councillors vote on Manukau Water’s charging structure” Manukau Water needs its charging structure approved by the council as part of the long term plan process.

Mr Stevens said there are many residents who use only a small amount of water yet are being faced with high fixed charges. “A lot of small businesses use less than 10 litres a day. In Papakura they would be charged $7.90 a year and in Auckland $11.24. In Manukau City they are being charged $950 a year.”

“It’s no wonder we have had such a strong response. Many residents are totally fed up with being hit in the pocket like this”. It is particularly hard on the elderly who use less water and are on fixed incomes.

Peoples Choice wants fairness for low water users and hopes by taking a lead on this issue it will be able to influence the Council’s stance for the coming year.

The petition asks the council to approve a variable waste water charge for low water users. All residents and business owners are able to sign the on-line petition at www.PetitionOnline.com/pcwwp/petition.html
