Designer David Bennewith discusses his research and book on the work of Samoan-born graphic designer Joseph Churchward. Bennewith will tell the story of how he came to begin his research on Churchward, and how it has developed over the course of three years.
David Bennewith was born in 1977 in New Zealand but lives and works in Amsterdam. He has an MA in Typographic and Graphic Design from the Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem, and is currently a researcher in design at the Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht, Netherlands. He lectures, gives workshops, and writes on the subject of design. Bennewith’s most recent publication focuses on the work and working-life of the Samoan-born, New Zealand graphic designer Joseph Churchward, whose work is currently the subject of the exhibition Letter Man: Joseph Churchward’s world of type in The Ilott Room at Te Papa, the location of Bennewith’s talk.
