Central City to get user-friendly pedestrian signs

CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE
5 November 2009

Central City to get user-friendly pedestrian signs

Finding your way around the central city will be easier when easy-to-use pedestrian information signs are installed from 10 November.

The pedestrian signs will provide information to help visitors, employees and residents find major Christchurch attractions, important buildings, entertainment  venues, and buses.

A You Are Here location on each sign will indicate a user’s current position and orientation within the central city. The maps together with directional arrows and walking times to key destinations provide orientation for pedestrians and have been designed to make the signs easy to use and read.

The first 18 signs will be installed in the area encompassed by Hagley Park, Kilmore, Manchester and St Asaph Streets. The new signage system is one of the several ongoing programmes by the Christchurch City Council for revitalising the central city.

The Council made the decision to install more signs after successfully trialling a prototype sign in Stewart Plaza for the past year. The signs are made of scratch-resistant materials with UV and fade resistant colours.

The pedestrian signs will help visitors to the Central City conveniently find their way to major destinations, and hopefully make their experiences more memorable and enjoyable, says Carolyn Ingles, Programme Manager Liveable City with the Council. “These user-friendly signs are one of the initiatives for promoting the central city. The signs will provide an attractive unifying element to the Central Business District streetscape and provide a more pedestrian-friendly environment.”

The signage will add further benefits by encouraging visitors to visit more attractions in the Central City and strengthening Central City’s image as an accessible, attractive and active destination.
