Pike River Mine Tragedy hearings to be held in Greymouth

The Royal Commission on the Pike River Mine Tragedy today announced that while no final decisions have been made, they are planning for the majority of hearings to be held in Greymouth.

Chair of the Commission, Hon Justice Graham Panckhurst, says processes will be fair, transparent and accessible.

“I will ensure that the families who have been affected by this tragedy are consulted. Interested parties will also be consulted before any decisions are made about the location of hearings.

“The Royal Commission is in its early planning stages and we have only just begun to work through the logistics of scheduling hearings and venues.“

The Royal Commission’s office will be based in Christchurch.

The Royal Commission operates independently of government but receives administrative assistance from the Department of Internal Affairs.
