NZ Mountain Safety Council Sends Message of Support to Christchurch

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council today says its thoughts are with the people of Christchurch and Canterbury who are suffering immensely as a result of yesterday‘s devastating earthquake.

CEO Darryl Carpenter said: ‘We are a far reaching organisation and have employees, branches and volunteer members and suppliers located in this region. In addition there are a number of head offices, of many of our member organisations such as Girl Guides, New Zealand Alpine Club, Search & Rescue Institute of New Zealand and Education Outdoor New Zealand.’

‘Our thoughts are with all those who are directly impacted by yesterday’s events. We strongly encourage everyone to follow advice from Civil Defence and search and rescue personnel.’ Mr Carpenter added.

The New Zealand and Australian governments have set up phone numbers for people requiring urgent assistance:

New Zealand: 0800 779 997
Australia: 1800 555 135

The New Zealand Red Cross also has a number available for those wishing to track missing family members:
