Contractor ticks off the final task for Waioeka Gorge road
The final task on the contractor’s programme have been completed with the final seal placed and road markings applied to the gorge road between Opotiki and Gisborne.
A section of State Highway 2 is now fully reinstated through the Waioeka Gorge, which was closed for four weeks by a large slip this time last year.
NZTA’s Bay of Plenty state highways manager Brett Gliddon says the reinstatement project was completed six weeks ahead of schedule due in part to the fine weather experienced since the project started in October.
The road is now operating as normal with both lanes fully open, however landscaping the area will be undertaken in by May 2013 when conditions are more suitable says Mr Gliddon.
The completion of the project will be formalised by a blessing ceremony to be held in early April to be conducted by local iwi with local mayors and Anne Tolley MP for Eastern Bay of Plenty attending.
