Global events experts secured for World Masters Games 2017

Auckland’s hosting of the world’s largest participation multi-sport event – Auckland 2017 World Masters Games – took a major step forward today with the appointments of its Board Chair and Chief Executive.

The Board of ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development) today announced two key appointments to the Auckland 2017 World Masters Games – Sir John Wells as Board Chair, and Jennah Wootten as Chief Executive.

ATEED Board Chair, David McConnell says the independent interview panels which managed the recruitment processes for each role have delivered world-class experts.

“We are expecting the Auckland 2017 World Masters Games to bring in around 250,000 visitor nights for Auckland. We haven’t seen an event of this scale since RWC 2011 brought in more than 130,000 visitors to New Zealand.

“Both Sir John and Jennah have outstanding track records and work portfolios. They are known globally for their expertise in major events delivery and governance. The bringing together of their expertise and knowledge is a real win for Auckland,” he said.

Sir John has been involved with a number of recent major sporting events as either Board Chair or Director; namely Rugby NZ 2011 Ltd (Rugby World Cup), Volvo Ocean Race Auckland Stopover 2012 Local Organising Committee, the Barfoot & Thompson ITU Triathlon World Cup 2011 and World Champs 2012.

Mr McConnell says the scale and complexity of Auckland 2017 World Masters Games requires a dedicated team whose sole focus is the successful implementation of the event. It is not possible to deliver this within ATEED’s usual business.

“More than 25,000 competitors and 10,000 spectators are estimated to converge on Auckland. The announcement of these two key appointments provide a solid foundation for a successful event in 2017”, said Mr McConnell.

International Masters Games Association (IMGA) Chief Executive Officer, Jens Holm, has commended Auckland on the calibre of the two appointments.

“The IMGA had a great experience in 2009 for the Sydney event, and we are about to head to Torino, Italy for the 2013 event. Coming to Auckland for 2017 will be a genuine pleasure. The confirmation of both Sir John Wells and Ms Wootten fills me with confidence for the success of Auckland 2017 World Masters Games. I look forward to working with them both after the official handover to Auckland at the Games in Torino, in August,” said Mr Holm.

Ms Wootten, currently Manager Major Events – ATEED, moves to the role on 17 June. She will spearhead the vision and event delivery by the ATEED-owned limited liability company formed to run the games.

Sir John Wells and Ms Wootten will head to Torino to be part of the official handover. Further appointments to the Auckland 2017 World Masters Games Board are expected before the end of June.
