Council Candidate Calls for Fairer Parking in Central City

Council Candidate Calls for Fairer Parking System in Central City.

Labour Party City Council Candidate Mark Peck is calling on the City Council to investigate more parking in the central city, to provide relief for motorists who are being used as a revenue stream for Parking Enforcement contractors.

“If we want a truly pedestrian friendly central city, we desperately need more parking spaces. Wellingtonians are sick and tired of being used as revenue earners for the contractors that manage parking in the central city. It’s time for a system that works for people, not the contractors.”

Peck is proposing investing in underground car parks below both the Railway Station and Courtney Place, to take the pressure of the central city’s overcrowded car parks.

“A far better alternative would be to investigate developing underground parking in the central city to make more spaces available. Get a coupon as you arrive and pay as you leave. No tickets.

And the revenue gathered could be used to provide appropriate transport between the two hubs. This would allow more people to enter the central city and provide a real boost to businesses. It’s a win/win situation.”

“We should be encouraging visitors to the central city, without the problem of finding a car park, and then worrying about a hefty fine. You shouldn’t have to run the warden gauntlet to enjoy Wellington.”
