Get Boating Skills if you might be ‘Suddenly in Charge’

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s Harbourmaster encourages anyone going out in a boat this summer to sign up for the Coastguards boat safety information evening.

‘Suddenly In Charge’ is a free boating safety information session being offered next week and before the summer holidays on Wednesday 17 December from 7 – 9 pm.

Coastguard will provide essential basic safety knowledge for anyone who regularly crews on a boat and could have to suddenly take charge. Advice will include lifejacket safety and radio procedures.

This extra summer advisory session does not replace the normal Coastguard boat education programme.

Harbourmaster Phil Norman says “I’d like to see boaties encouraging their family or regular fishing mates to attend this short course. If anything happens to you as a skipper, it will be reassuring to know you can rely on someone else on board to take charge and get you all home safely.”

The class will be held at Coastguard Hawke’s Bay’s building, Meeanee Quay, Napier Harbour. Coastguard asks that people register quickly as there are limited spaces, phone 021 103 9563.
