Tidy up for entrance to Whangarei at Blue Goose
This month the disused buildings and over-grown gardens at the Blue Goose on the busy stretch of State Highway One through Te Waiiti, south of Whangarei, will be demolished.
Whangarei District Council Mayor Sheryl Mai said the vacant buildings will no longer be targets for vandals and the area would be cleaned up to create a much better impression of Whangarei for people coming in from the South. The space will be used for car parking for people attending sports games on the fields next door.
Mayor Mai said the site has had a high profile over the years, through its time as a restaurant, throughout the Paper Mill era, and during discussions several years ago of plans for it to become a gateway to the city.
“We acknowledge the importance of this site, its history and significance to many. I am sure people will be pleased to see it being tidied up and cared for and used by the community again. There are no plans for developing it at this stage.”
Local company Robinsons will begin the demolition and clearing project next week and it should be finished early in March.
