Alternative to Throwing Away After the Big Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [September 21st 2016]

AUCKLAND EVENT OFFERS ALTERNATIVE TO THROWING AWAY AFTER THE BIG DAY

Auckland’s first eco-friendly wedding event is set to take place in Pakuranga this weekend.

Brides and grooms to be will be able to shop newlyweds lightly used dresses, supplies and décor in the ‘wedding garage sale’ section of the event so one person’s something old can be another’s something new. Attendees will also be able to meet with wedding vendors who are local, ethical and/or eco-friendly.

“The whole idea is to help budgeting brides keep their finances in check, see newlyweds recuperate some big day costs, and give a helping hand to mother earth while we’re at it,” says event organiser Liz Andrews.

Over 80 dresses are registered for sale on the day, as well as tables of wedding décor and supplies. Local wedding vendors from celebrants to décor specialists, makeup artists, photographers and numerous other bridal businesses will also be in attendance.

Liz, a Pakuranga local, said it’s a way to bring some green-thinking to a white wedding without walking down the aisle in a toilet paper gown.

“I quickly realised the environmental and financial impact of a wedding is huge,” says Liz, a bride-to-be-herself, “and then realised there are few options for people wanting to make even one or two green decisions around their big day.”

When she started talking about the situation with married friends, many pointed out that there isn’t a lot you can do with wedding décor once the big day has been and gone so she got to work setting up the event, working with local newlyweds and eco-friendly businesses to get it off the ground.

“I just want to show people that there are ways to cost save, and that a 'junk collection wedding' can still look beautiful. I want everybody who can’t justify phenomenally large wedding budgets like us to stomp on the concept that a wedding has to be all brand new, perfectly crisp white and matchy matchy!”

The event will take place this Saturday 24th September 2016 at the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Tickets are only $5.00 and are available now via https://recycledweddingsnewzealand.wordpress.com/buy-tickets/. The first 100 people through the door will also receive a free goodie bag featuring product from the likes of Eco Store, Dilmah Tea, and Together Journal Magazine.
