Stars line Wellington waterfront for Christmas Appeal

29/11/2016

Hundreds of stars to line Wellington’s waterfront for City Mission’s Christmas Appeal!

The Wellington City Mission is excited to acknowledge generous local people and businesses this Friday 2 December as they launch their Christmas Walk of Fame! Hundreds of stars will be displayed on Wellington’s beautiful waterfront from Friday as part of The Mission’s Christmas Star Appeal.

Businesses, individuals, families and groups have purchased the naming rights to the Hollywood Walk of Fame-style stars which will be displayed until 26 December. Each star represents families across Greater Wellington being supported by The Mission this Christmas!

The initial 100 stars (laid down on 2 December) will continue to grow as more and more people add their name or logo to the Walk of Fame over the coming weeks. People can simply head to www.ChristmasStar.co.nz to purchase a star for their family, business, group or team. There are a number of star options available this year including an exclusive new Gold Star.

The launch of the Walk of Fame coincides with The Mission’s annual Street Day Appeal, also happening on Friday 2 December! Hundreds of Street Day volunteers will be collecting throughout Greater Wellington between the hours of 7am-7pm, at locations including Wellington City, Wellington airport, Johnsonville, Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt. Thanks to the continuing support of EFTPOS NZ, many sites will again be equipped with eftpos facilities for the convenience of donors. The Mission encourages people to keep an eye out for collectors in their area for an opportunity to donate!

The Mission’s Walk of Fame and Street Day are both part of their annual Christmas Star Appeal. The generous donations received during this appeal ensure they can continue working with people who are struggling, especially during the Christmas season. They will provide families with food parcels and gifts so they can celebrate Christmas together, while continuing to offer year-round services such as budgeting advice and in-home social work too.

Wellington City Mission Chief Executive Officer Michelle Branney said: “We’re really looking forward to launching our second annual Christmas Walk of Fame this Friday. It’s exciting to see it becoming a regular Christmas feature along Wellington’s waterfront. The idea behind it is to flip the Hollywood Walk of Fame on its head. Rather than symbolising wealth and celebrity, The Mission’s Walk of Fame is all about helping those in need and providing hope. We hope that people will enjoy visiting their stars, knowing that each one represents families being supported this Christmas. It really does make a world of difference when the community gets behind The Mission so we, in turn, can help where it’s most needed.”
