Tasman’s Great Taste Trail temporary route in Richmond
Work began this week on a rock wall between the Richmond Recovery Centre and the estuary.
The rock wall will protect both the Great Taste Trail and the Richmond Resource Recovery Centre from erosion, and is jointly funded by the Tasman District Council and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). The total cost of the work is estimated at $490,000.
Until the work is complete (due to finish in early April), the Great Taste Trail will be rerouted along Fittal Street for 260 metres before joining back up with the permanent trail.
A temporary 30kmh speed limit has been introduced on Fittal Street to ensure the safety of cyclists using the temporary route.
Tasman District Council project manager Jeff Robinson said while some erosion had happened over time, storms in 2015 had accelerated the damage.
“If we let that continue, both the trail and the landfill would be at risk in future storms. This work will provide more permanent protection to contain the Richmond Resource Recovery Centre and maintain the long term integrity of the Trail. MBIE recognises the importance of protecting the Great Taste Trail and has chipped in about a third of the cost of the rock wall.”
Taylors Contracting has been appointed to carry out the work, which began on Monday.
