Hamilton’s Favourite Pre-Loved Fashion Event Returns To Divert Clothes From Landfill

Hamilton’s war on wardrobe waste is ramping up with the return of the popular thrift shopping event helping to divert one million kilograms of clothing from landfill every year.

Thrifty Threads runs from 11-13 September at The Meteor, and is hosted by Hamilton City Council, Hospice Waikato, Sip & Sew Workshops, Recreators, and Serving Up T.

Thrifters can fill up to five bags of pre-loved clothing for $20 (or $10 with a student ID). All door proceeds go to Hospice Waikato, with last year's event raising $24,000 for the charity.

Council’s Head of Resource Recovery Sarah Wilson shared how Thrifty Threads aims to not only reduce clothes to landfill, but educate on the impacts of textile waste.

“Before entering the shopping event, you can join in with the interactive activities and demonstrations around clothing sustainability.

"It's a great chance to grab a new wardrobe for only $20 while doing the right thing for the planet,” said Wilson.

Reducing what goes to landfill is an important action in Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

As well as the usual clothing sale, some event partners are hosting workshops and events across the city to help share the Thrifty Threads kaupapa.
