INZ Warns Of Increasing Phone Scams
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is urging the public to stay alert following a rise in phone scams where callers impersonate INZ staff and use New Zealand mobile numbers to appear legitimate.
“These calls are not genuine. Immigration New Zealand will never, under any circumstances, contact you by phone to request money,” says INZ Chief Operating Officer Stephen Vaughan. “If someone calls saying they are from Immigration New Zealand demanding a payment - it is a scam. Hang up immediately.”
Scam tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting New Zealanders, migrants living in New Zealand, and people overseas. In this recent scam, callers claim there is an urgent problem with a visa to create pressure or fear. They may ask the person to “press 1”, speak to an operator, or to provide personal information such as passport or bank details.
“These scammers want people to worry,” Mr Vaughan says. “But our staff will never ask for bank details, and we will never ask for payments over the phone.”
He says it is important that both New Zealanders and migrants understand this message.
“We know how important immigration matters are to people’s lives,” he says. “If you are ever unsure about a communication you’ve received, contact us directly. We would much rather you check with us than worry.”
Mr Vaughan says INZ is committed to supporting people who may feel vulnerable to these types of scams.
“If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts,” he says. “Do not give any personal details. Hang up and report it.”
