The completion of upgrades and improvements at Hood Aerodrome future-proofing the facility has been marked by Associate Regional Development Minister Mark Patterson.

The work secures the aerodrome’s future as a modern aviation hub, fit-for-purpose to support the growing Wairarapa region.

This project was made possible through a $10 Million Grant from the COVID-19: Infrastructure Investment Fund (CRRF) administered by Kānoa - Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit, and $7 million in Council co-funding.

Speaking at the event, Masterton Deputy Mayor Craig Bowyer described the project as a “$17 million partnership to support one of our region’s most valuable assets”.

“Hood is home to a range of user groups, including agricultural aviation operators who support our farming economy, and provides essential services for emergency and Life Flight operations that save lives across Wairarapa.

“It is also a hub for innovation and heritage, with everything from self-built aircraft to worldclass vintage warbirds taking to the skies over Masterton. This diverse aviation ecosystem is part of what makes Hood so special.

“While the return of an air passenger service was not the sole aim of the infrastructure project, an upgraded and modernised Hood Aerodrome offers a contemporary, fit-for-purpose, and welcoming experience, and removes barriers for airlines considering the route, and we are strongly supporting those wanting to kick off this conversation.”

The project has included:

• Runway widening and full resurfacing.
• An expanded terminal apron, giving more room for aircraft manoeuvring and future operations.
• Upgraded airfield lighting, windsocks, and other critical fixtures to meet modern standards.
• New water, wastewater, and electrical infrastructure, enabling the next stage of hangar development with 27 sites for lease.
• Improved security fencing to meet CAA Qualification Certification requirements.
• And new access roads to support future growth.

“Not many districts have access to a local aerodrome, run by a local Council to support key lifeline functions. For us here in Wairarapa, it is key to supporting our region as we continue to grow, and in the event of an emergency.”
