Calling All Fosters – SPCA Encourages Kiwis To Become Part Of The Foster Family This Winter
SPCA is calling for all animal lovers to open their homes and foster animals in need this winter, with thousands of dogs, puppies, and farm animals requiring some tender loving care in the coming cold months.
National Foster and Volunteer Manager Viv Moore says fostering an animal is hugely impactful, even when the commitment is temporary.
“Fostering is a way to make a huge difference to animals in need,” she says. “Shortterm care creates longterm impact, and every person who steps forward helps change the lives of these animals."
Winter can be a challenging time for animals waiting in care, and Viv says a warm, stable home environment can transform their wellbeing.
SPCA hopes to welcome around 250 new dog and puppy foster carers nationwide to meet demand.
“Local animals need local foster homes,” Viv says. “A few weeks in a loving home helps dogs build confidence, farm animals recover, puppies gain valuable social skills and companion animals get ready for their forever families.
“And while winter fostering can take a little extra effort, many of our fosters tell us it’s one of the most rewarding experiences they’ve ever had. Sharing your home with a dog, puppy, chicken, goat or even a rooster brings companionship, routine, and joy – and it often brightens your own days as much as theirs.”
SPCA is also seeking foster homes for farm animals and equines. Viv says people with suitable space, facilities, and experience can make a meaningful difference for horses, sheep, goats, chickens, or ducks needing shortterm care.
SPCA provides full support to every foster carer. “All animal care costs are covered – food, vet care, medication, bedding, toys, equipment. We’re with you every step of the way,” Viv says.
“What we need from you is your care, your commitment, and the ability to travel to and from your local Centre when needed.”
Viv says foster homes come in all shapes and sizes, and SPCA works hard to match each animal with the right environment.
“Whether you have children, other pets, flatmates, or limited availability, we’ll do our best to find a foster arrangement that suits you. Even if you can only help for a short time, it still matters.”
For those considering adoption but not ready to commit, fostering can be an ideal first step.
“It’s a chance to learn, to help, and to see what life with an animal is really like,” Viv says.
“And sometimes, that shortterm stay turns into a forever match.”
Viv encourages anyone with passion, space, and time to get involved. “Fostering saves lives – and we’ll support you every step of the way. Give them a winter worth remembering and join the SPCA foster family.”
