One Love 2001 - celebrating Waitangi Day in Wgtn

7 February, 2001 PRESS RELEASE

One Love 2001 - celebrating Waitangi Day in Wellington... with the big roots reggae sound

A window of wonderfully sunny weather on Tuesday afternoon encouraged throngs of Wellingtonians to commemorate this year's Waitangi Day by dancing on the grassfloor of the Dell in the Botanic Gardens. Radio Active 89FM in association with the Fuse Trust were overwhelmed by the attendance at this year's One Love, Radio Active 89FM's annual free outdoor roots reggae music event, with a diverse crowd estimated to be around the 5000 mark. One Love, in it's fourth year, evolved due to the coincidence of the late Bob Marley's birthday falling upon the 6th February. The heartfelt and genuine feel of roots reggae (made famous in the worldwide music scene by the Jamaican Marley), is the focus of the event and advocates a vibe of peace and unity. Station Manager David Gibbons believes it is this ethos of One Love which helped bring together both Maori and Pakeha in celebration of New Zealand's National Day. Performers included Active's Homebass Crew (DJ's Grasshopper, Puppy & TopKnot), the enigmatic DJ Lemon, the Dub Connection and the very well-received TrinityRoots.
