Stone Sculptures Added to City Art Collection

Stone Sculptures Added to City Art Collection

Two new stone sculptures are being added to Manukau City’s art collection.

Both sculptures were crafted by local artist, John Tohia. The first sculpture “Vessel of Life” will be unveiled at the Nathan Homestead in Manurewa on Sunday 4th March, after the Manukau Youth Orchestra’s “Sounds of Summer” concert. Made of andesite rock, this 400kg sculpture was inspired by the figureheads on the bows of Roman ships. It shows a woman’s head in front of the vessel with wings wrapping around the sides.

The second sculpture “Mother and Child” will be unveiled at the Clendon Community Centre in the next month or two. The contemporary art piece is made from Hinuera stone and was inspired by the relationship between a mother and child. The delay in the unveiling has been caused by an act of vandalism to the art work, meaning a replacement piece has had to be created.

Deputy Mayor, Anne Candy, says that the purchase of the sculptures fits well with Council’s policy of supporting Manukau artists. “We are extremely pleased to add these superb pieces to Council’s art collection. It is important that we gather and preserve items that reflect our city, our culture and our people for the benefit of future generations.”
