RUSH BEGINS FOR MONTANA A frantic dash by Allied Domecq and Lion Nathan to the 51 per cent mark on Montana Group's share registry was signalled yesterday as Lion lost almost a third of its holding in the company. The committee deciding the brewer's punishment for illegally buying Montana shares ruled that Lion must sell 19 per cent of Montana. http://www.brewing.co.nz/news/businessherald/20010630lion.htm

ALLIED SAYS MONTANA SHARE PROMISE WITHIN RULES British drinks giant Allied Domecq said today its promise to buy up to 23 per cent of New Zealand winemaker Montana complied with the new Takeovers Code. Allied on Friday filed a notice seeking to increase its 27 per cent stake in Montana beyond the July 1 introduction of the code -- which restricts buying by shareholders with stakes of 20-50 per cent of a target company http://www.brewing.co.nz/news/businessherald/20010702lion.htm

*** AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL BEER AWARDS 2001 ***

There were 492 entries from 38 countries at the Australian International Beer Awards, 21 June in Melbourne. New Zealand was well represented with three big trophy winners as well as a good spread of medals across many breweries and styles. Trophy Winners:

Cock & Bull, Monk's Habit - Best Draught Ale, Small Brewery Section Monk's Habit also won two gold and two silver medals in other classes of the Australian awards. It was also judged Supreme Champion Beer earlier in the year at the New Zealand Beer Awards (for the second time in three years). Monk's Habit is currently only available at the Cock & Bull at Botany Town Centre and Ellerslie in Auckland. If you get a chance, make sure you try some of this extremely hopped ale, popular even with people who don't like beer. Last week the Cock & Bull was also judged Best Business in Manukau City. http://www.realbeer.co.nz/library/alefile/monkshabit.html

Monteith's Saison - Champion Ale Saison is another beer driven by a big hop flavour from a specially grown variety of Saaz. This autumn seasonal offering has all but run out. Limited supplies have been spotted in some bars as well as Woolworth's Grey Lynn. Look out this week for the release of the winter seasonal Monteith's Porter http://www.realbeer.co.nz/library/alefile/monteithssaison.html

Duncan's Founders Brewery, Long Black - Champion Small Brewery Beer Another small brewery that picked up a selection of awards at the NZ Beer Awards wins again in Melbourne. A great coup for this Nelson brewery that produces a fully certified organic beer range.

Gold Medal Winners: Harrington's Brewery, Christchurch - Big John Special Reserve Harrington's Brewery, Nelson - Wheat Beer St Arnou - St Cloud Grand Reserve The Loaded Hog, Christchurch - Wheat Beer Speight's - Pale Ale DB - Export Dry

The Grand Champion Trophy went to Schofferhofer Kristallweizen (clear wheat beer), from German brewer Binding-Braueri AG.This is a filtered version of their Hefeweizen (cloudy wheat beer), which still offers subtle notes of banana and clove and is available at Foodtown and Woolworth's.

This is the second year running that a wheat beer has won the Grand Champion, with last year's winner being Hoegaarden White. As with wine, these medals are a good indication of quality and a good place to start when trying new beers. Full list of results www.beerawards.com

DB SUCCESS AT 2001 AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL BEER AWARDS DB Breweries has achieved multiple success at the recent 2001 Australian International Beer Awards in Melbourne. Limited seasonal release, Monteith's Saison Ale, won first prize, Champion Ale at the event which attracts entrants from around the globe. Saison was the highest scoring beer in its class. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010629db.htm

SPEIGHT'S PALE ALE GOES FOR GOLD Speight's Pale Ale has won a gold medal in the Australasian packaged ale section at the Australian International Beer Awards, held in Melbourne recently. This award follows the accolade given to Pale Ale at the New Zealand Beer Awards, where Speight's Pale Ale took the top award for the pale ale section, winner of class for Australasian packaged. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010628lion.htm
