Big Kiwi Punt On Perks To Win US Masters
Wednesday 10 April 2002
A New Zealand TAB customer is expecting Kiwi golfer Craig Perks to repeat his Players Championship success at the US Masters - the punter has put $500 on Perks at odds of $80 to return $40,000.
But TAB golf bookie Mark Stafford doesn’t share the Auckland punter’s confidence.
“Perks has certainly got the game to do well with length off the tee and a great short game, but we’ve seen so many Masters debutantes overwhelmed by the occasion,” he said.
The US Masters kicks off at Augusta National tomorrow night (NZ time) with Perks and Michael Campbell carrying New Zealand’s hopes.
Stafford has put Campbell at $40 to win the tournament: “Every year leading into the Majors, Campbell has been threatening to recapture his brilliance but he always seems to capitulate.”
As expected World No 1 Tiger Woods at $3.25 is the TAB favourite to win his third green jacket, but Stafford said to keep an eye on the following pack.
“The pack chasing Tiger includes Ernie Els ($12), Phil Mickelson ($14), Jose Maria Olazabel ($15) and Retief Goosen ($15), and they’re all playing well. If I had to pick one to challenge Tiger I would go for Olazabel,” Stafford said.
