Free Concert at Viaduct Harbour this Sunday

Free Concert at “The Stage” in the Viaduct Harbour this Sunday.

Visitors to the Viaduct Harbour this Sunday 29 September will be treated to a free concert by the Italian Navy Band at the newly opened open air venue “The Stage” on Te Wero island. The Band will perform at 3pm following an official welcome by the Mayor of Auckland, Hon John Banks.

Arriving in New Zealand on Friday in time to participate in the America’s Cup Parade on Saturday, the Band are proud to entertain Auckland with their highly professional performance and varied repertoire of music. With 65 members dressed in their Naval dress white uniforms, the Italian Navy Band will offer a spectacular visual and musical feast for visitors to relax to after lunch. More than 1,000 seats will be available at no charge.

The Italian Navy Band originated in 1860 from small bands belonging to different parts of Italy before the country was united into one and the Royal Italian Navy was formed. From 1965 until 1991, the Band was stationed in Taranto, Italy’s major naval base. They are now based in Rome, playing often there and in Milan and Rome. All of the players are Petty Officers on permanent duty and they attend national musical institutions and conservatories, winning many prizes in European competitions. Master Director is Antonio Barbagallo and the Band has released its own CD of 16 musical pieces.
