Open Letter to The Chief Executive, New Zealand Cricket

Dear Mr Snedden,

Just a quick note to let you know that we all sympathise with your position about the lack of players for the forthcoming season. But could we remind you that Dunedin has fielded a team over the past three years that has twice beaten and once drawn games against the Black Caps? Can we help?

Those Scarfies XI versus Black Caps games have always been scheduled, somewhat unfairly we might suggest, only a few days into Otago Orientation in February, so our Scarfie training and match fitness has been a bit dodgy you might say. But staring down the barrel of the Indian Tour, it's looking like the New Zealand A team could be in the same position come New Years.

Right at the moment, we're all flat out in exams but a quick text message round town last night fielded some solid interest in forming the Scarfies team pretty smartly in the New Year. For example, a fair number of us will be up Central for the holidays and should be recovered and in form for the 4th of January one-dayer in Queenstown.

A word of advice about the pay offer. The bucks on offer against the average student loan will ensure a previously untapped pool of hugely enthusiastic, if not entirely capable, players in all University towns. However, the Otago Scarfies remain the only team to have played and beaten the Black Caps recently so we expect a call up any time.
