Lower Hutt artist Stephen Borrows, is holding his first solo exhibition “Cigarettes & Coffee” at ROAR! gallery 22 Vivian Street, Wellington 29th January – 12th February 2003. His work has featured in a number of group exhibitions throughout the Wellington region in the past 8 years, including the Dowse Art Gallery’s Exhibitions “Home Fires” in 2000 and “Colour & Light” in 1999.
The two central themes in “Cigarettes & Coffee”, are religion and portraits. Stephen finds inspiration through creating “It’s about the joy of the experience, of executing the work, and encapsulating it in the drawing and spreading that around to the people who come and see it or who live with the work” he said.
His main
medium is wax resist. "The dye, crayon and wax resist
fascinates me as a medium. You can apply the dye then wipe
out, you are never sure of the final product. It's fun." He
said. Stephen is excited, because in this exhibition he
will be featuring both works in oil pastel and wax resist.
