Structural Changes At Te Papa

An amended management team structure for the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa was announced today by Chief Executive Dr Seddon Bennington.

Four new directorships will be created: Art and Visual Culture, Natural Science, Mäori, and History and Pacific Cultures. These roles replace the current role of General Manager Museum Resources.

"These new specialist directors will give increased emphasis to the importance of curatorial research based on the national collections, and to public access to the collections and knowledge and research related to these," Seddon Bennington said today.

"Te Papa has achieved outstanding success with its exhibitions and programmes drawing on opportunities offered by its unified collections. These collections embrace art and visual culture, natural environment, Mäori taonga, Pacific cultures and history. The new positions strengthen the representation of the knowledge of these collections at the leadership team level".

A new Corporate Services Division will combine service and operational areas such as Finance, Human Resources, IT and Policy and Planning.

"Te Papa will continue to draw on the strengths of its unified collections and its commitment to biculturalism. It will continue to work towards maintaining its high visitation and visitor satisfaction and be a commercial success. The new management team structure also identifies areas of added emphasis such as relationships with schools, outreach and virtual access to the collections and the scholarship of the institution," Said Dr Bennington.
