Ever wonder about the creative ideas that never make it?

Perhaps not but, every year, Creative New Zealand receives hundreds of submissions for arts funding... and every year, hundreds of people are batted away - their ideas buried, possibly forever. Good thing or bad? Who knows? But it's funny to watch!

In July 2000, playwright Mel Johnston documented three applicants going through the process of applying to Creative New Zealand. The result, Confidence in me, is an intimate, funny, eye-opener of a film.

Confidence in me features comics Jo Randerson, Gentiane Lupi and Jonny Brugh, playwright Ryan McFadyen and the performance-poetry collective POART. As interviewer, camera operator and editor, Mel Johnston closely tracked their progress and created an entertaining, provocative 52m film which will have you cringing and feeling for these people, and laughing in recognition of the absurd bureaucratic hoop-jumping along the way...

Confidence in me earned Mel Johnston a place as a finalist for the SPADA New Film-maker of the Year, and it returns to BATS Theatre just in time for Creative New Zealand's next funding round (which closes July 25).
