Making the Catwalk Connection - NZ Fashion Week

News release events – 1
Tuesday 7 October, 2003

Making the Catwalk Connection at L’Oréal New Zealand Fashion Week.
Events open to the public during the collections.

A ticket to a designer show at L’Oréal New Zealand Fashion Week in mid-October is often compared in value to a ticket to a sold out rugby test at Eden Park.

However, in the past unless you had that designer connection, your chances of capturing the catwalk action in person were slim to say the least.

Organisers of L’Oréal New Zealand Fashion Week have now added a series of events designed to give followers of fashion greater access to the first international collections for Winter 2004.

QANTAS CATWALK CLUB
The Qantas Catwalk Club is the equivalent of an Eden Park corporate box.

For around $120, patrons will sip on a glass of Deutz, nibble on canapés and enjoy a seat at one of the shows along with the obligatory goodie bag of sponsors product.

“It’s the best way to experience Fashion Week“, explains managing director Pieter Stewart, “and after the show you can really immerse yourself in the atmosphere by spending the rest of the day at the event wandering around the Exhibition or grabbing a coffee at the Fashion Quarterly café.”

Stewart would love to see groups of friends take advantage of the luxurious surroundings of the Qantas Catwalk Club which will be themed by design store Home of Ponsonby. “If I wasn’t working, it’s the place I’d be,” says Stewart.

Tickets are limited. For more information about Qantas Catwalk Club, please contact Michaela@nzfashionweek.com

STYLE ON STAGE
The four days of trade shows conclude with, Style on Stage. The hugely popular highlights parade will show twice at The Auckland Town Hall – The Edge on Thursday 23 October, 6.30pm and 8pm.
These shows encapsulate the best of the week from all 45 plus catwalk designers. Tickets to Style on Stage are $25 and available from Ticketek*. Tickets are limited.

NEWMARKET FASHION FRIDAY
And of course the final day of L’Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week is a ‘mecca’ for anyone with a love of style and an eye for a bargain.

Outside in Aotea Square, an overnight transformation of the Exhibition Marquee takes place and Newmarket Fashion Friday emerges. The business heart of the collections is turned into a vibrant bazaar for fashion-hungry shoppers.

As well as many of the accessory and designer stands from the collections, there’s a new feature this year, a ‘Designer Sale’ of massive proportions with not just “specials” but a chance to meet many of the designers.

An entrance ticket to Newmarket Fashion Friday also buys you access to hourly in-season parades (first show at 11.30am, final show at 6.30pm) from all the major fashion stores in Newmarket in the Max Marquee.

Plus the chance to enjoy the same treats as the international delegates in the Fashion Quarterly café and watch the week’s catwalk action replayed on the dozens of screens around the Exhibition area.

There are special fashion-theme goodie bags on sale and for anyone who’s ever considered fashion as a career, tutors from AUT and the Fashion Institute will be on site to discuss options for budding designers of the future.

Tickets to Newmarket Fashion Friday are $15 and available from Ticketek*.

After hours each night, there are various events around town for delegates and crew to wind down. The biggest of these parties are towards the end of the ‘Fashion Week’ and are open to the public.

FASHION FINALE PARTY
The Fashion Finale Party at Coast Bar on Princes Wharf is set to be one of the hippest parties of the year with hot band of the moment Fat Freddies Drop signed to play. DJ’s and quiet spaces will provide more relaxing surroundings for tired fashionistas including designers and international delegates who will be heading home the next day.

With prizes, continuous food and lots of special effects to farewell the most fashionable week in New Zealand, it’s a party not to be missed.

Tickets to Fashion Finale Party are $80 and available from Ticketek*.

LNZFW WRAP PARTY

FASHION LAB
The theme for this year’s FashionLab is “The Importance of Developing a Brand”.

Five key speakers - including some of New Zealand’s most inspiring fashion names, a brand design specialist and our special VIP guest Cozmo Jenks - give their interpretation of what it takes to develop and maintain great brands.

Milliner to the stars, Cozmo Jenks whose creations adorn influential heads as diverse as royals at Ascot to stars like Jamiroquai and Kylie Minogue will talk about how she’s made hats sexy in a market as fickle and tough as London.

She’ll also show how her own image as an “it” girl beloved by the glossy magazines and tabloids is all part of that plan.

New Zealand Fashion icon Paula Ryan will talk about establishing her brand, Simply You in three of the toughest sectors of the market. Apparel, magazines and inspirational speaking – Paula shares how she made it happen.

Streetwear heroes Huffer also feature in the line up. Steve Dunstan and Dan Buckley have created uniquely New Zealand focused garments that are as hip in High Street as they are in Hamilton or Invercargill. They’ll talk about finding the right fit for their market.

One of L’Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week’s sponsors is international website guru Jack Yan whose base is in Wellington but his website Lucire is known as a fountain of fashion knowledge around the world.

Brand development specialist, designer, director and face of Dow Design, Annie Dow will talk about the value of a brand and the importance of brand distinction to achieve success in a competitive market. Annie and her team at Dow have helped their clients to create some of New Zealand’s greatest brands.

FashionLab will take place on Thursday 23 October in the Concert Chamber, Auckland Town Hall, The Edge, from 9am-midday.

FashionLab tickets are $35 for students and $50 for adults and available from Ticketek*.
An entry ticket to Newmarket Fashion Friday is included.

As the event grows to meet the demands of the public for more access to the excitement and glamour of New Zealand designer fashion, new opportunities have been created for fashion focused consumers. Enjoy the opportunity to partake in L’Oréal New Zealand Fashion Week 2003.
