Brains Triumph Over Brawn When It Comes To Television’s Sexiest

Thinking-woman’s crumpet, Simon Dallow, has beaten some of television’s hottest hunks to take out the title of Sexiest Man in New Zealand’s biggest annual poll on television. Simon triumphed over Andy Dye, Robbie Magasiva, Mathew Ridge, Manu Bennett and Charles Mesure to take one of the most sought after titles in the TV Guide Best on the Box People’s Choice Awards for the second year running.

But Simon’s queen was toppled from her throne with Petra Bagust claiming the title of Sexiest Woman from Simon’s news presenter wife Alison Mau, wrecking the high-profile couple’s chances of repeating last year’s double act as New Zealand’s sexiest couple.

More than 216,000 votes were counted across all categories – including best actors, presenters, comedy, drama and news show – in this year’s TV Guide Best on the Box People’s Choice Awards, celebrated in Auckland today at a glitzy awards ceremony.

TV Guide editor, Antony Phillips said that these awards mean a lot to the stars and the networks.

“By scooping a Best On The Box Award the stars know that they have pleased their toughest critics – the viewers,” says Phillips. “And with the overwhelming number of votes received this year – winners should feel very pleased with themselves.”

The news and current affairs categories were closely fought with TVNZ and TV3 going head to head in a number of categories. This has been the first year there has been an award for ‘Best News/Current Affairs’ programme and the contest went right down to the wire with 3 News narrowly beating its TVNZ rival with 41.7% of the votes to One News’s 39.6%.

Perennial favourites and network opponents John Campbell (3 News) and Judy Bailey (One News) have again reigned supreme, reclaiming their titles of Best Male and Female News/Current Affairs Presenters for the third year running.

The close rivalry between the two networks continued throughout the news categories with One News’s Jim Hickey winning Best Weather Presenter ahead of TV3’s Toni Marsh, and 3 News’s Clint Brown winning Best Sport Presenter over rival April Bruce from One.

Best Actor went to Jay Laga’aia who plays hot-headed lawyer, David Silesi in TV2’s Street Legal, while Jodie Rimmer won Best Actress for her performance as spunky Kathryn Moore in TV3’s The Strip.

The popularity of the long running Shortland Street shows no sign of fading winning the Best Drama on the Box ahead of Mercy Peak and Street Legal, while Best Comedy went to Willy Nilly for the third year in a row.

Winners were announced at a glitzy awards ceremony held in Auckland today. Dozen’s of celebrities turned up to the event with the hope of receiving a Best on the Box trophy. The event, held at Auckland’s Maritime Museum, was the first time that the awards have been celebrated in the form of a ceremony, and the venue was fittingly packed out.

The full listing of results and category breakdown of the TV Guide Best on the Box People’s Choice Awards will appear in the TV Guide on sale tomorrow (12 December). Ends.
