Shackletons Famous Boat Craned Into Te Papa

The James Caird, the famous lifeboat from Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated Endurance expedition to Antarctica, will be craned into Te Papa's fourth floor TOWER Gallery on TUESDAY 4 MAY 2004, 10AM.

The James Caird is a key object in the upcoming exhibition Antarctic Heroes - The Race To The South Pole opening at Te Papa on 29 May 2004.

The James Caird was the lifeboat on the 1914-17 Endurance expedition in which Shackleton, New Zealander Frank Worsley, and four others made their amazing 800 mile voyage across the treacherous Southern Ocean to raise the alarm and rescue their marooned crew.

The James Caird will be installed by Simon Stevens, Curator at the National Maritime Museum in London.
