Prime Minister To Open New Cardrona Chairlift
Prime Minister Helen Clark is to officially open Cardrona Alpine Resort’s new high-speed chairlift, the Whitestar Express on 1 July 2004.
The $5 million detachable quad chair lift is an important investment for both Cardrona and the local tourism industry as a whole as the ski area continues to ensure its facilities measure up to the high standards international tourism demands.
"The new lift at Cardrona will provide a great facility, both for New Zealand and international skiers,” said the Prime Minister. “Tourism contributes hugely to job creation, export earnings, regional development, and to the economy overall, and the ski industry is an important part of that contribution. Investments in facilities like this new lift play an important role in New Zealand tourism's continuing success.”
The Prime Minster will declare the Whitestar Express open at the base station at 2.30pm. Although the official opening is taking place on 1 July, the new chairlift will be ready for the season’s first skiers and snowboarders on Cardrona’s planned opening day of 24 June.
