“Otago Festival of the Arts programme rich and varied”

The Otago Festival of the Arts [29 September to 9 October 2004] programme has been launched.

Otago’s major cultural event presents a stellar array of international and New Zealand performers – along with Dunedin’s finest artists. With no less than six premières of new works, and guest artists coming from eight countries, the Otago Festival promises to be a startling celebration of creative endeavour.

The Festival programme is rich and varied. For eleven dynamic days and nights, there will be something for everyone, from American ‘vocal pop’ artist Amy X Neuburg to Vienna’s finest piano trio; from rare Mongolian throat-singing to new dance works from the Royal New Zealand Ballet; from Irish music legend Finbar Furey to Dunedin’s own internationally renowned baritone Jonathan Lemalu.

Witness the spectacle and pageantry of one of Britain’s most prestigious ceremonial bands, the 44-strong Irish Guards, or seize the rare opportunity to hear the Mutton Birds frontman Don McGlashan solo. Laugh in the aisles with Taki Rua Production’s side-splitting play The Untold Tales of Maui or peer into the tumultuous world of drug addiction with Raewyn Hill’s new dance-theatre work.

The city will be infused with festival fever as churches and museums are turned into theatres, an amazing walk-in 700 square metre sculpture is erected in the middle of the city and an enticing medley of lunch-time concerts and late-night cabaret is on offer.
