Event: Hare Krishnas Celebrate Unity in Diversity

Event: Hare Krishnas Celebrate Unity in Diversity

DATE: 5th September 2004

TIME: 11:00 AM - 3:30 PM

VENUE: Hare Krishna Temple, Riverhead

CONTACT: Atmananda das, Event Coordinator ; e-mail panorama@xtra.co.nz

On the occasion of the 108th birthday anniversary of the founder of ISKCON (The International Society for Krishna Consciousness), the Hare Krishnas are holding a special festival in Riverhead, at their new stunning temple and community facility.

These September 5th festivities will form part of the wider international celebrations organised to honour His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. The theme, Unity in Diversity, follows from a childhood prediction made about him that he would "build a house in which the whole world can live."

"We'll kick off five days of festivities on Saturday, the 4th, by serving the public a delicious free meal at our Food For Life Restaurant at 268 K Road (11:30 AM - 2:00 PM)", says Atmananda das, coordinator of the Festival. "Our founder, endearingly known as Prabhupad, said we are the 'kitchen religion'."

"We'll have an extra large chanting procession on Queen Street at the same time. On Tuesday, the 7th, we're celebrating Lord Krishna's Birthday ("Janmashtami"), with festivities continuing on through Wednesday as well.

"Among the features planned for Sunday the 5th are a haka and mihi by Maori Krishna members to greet dignitaries (like Local MP John Key) and the public; a Vedic bathing ceremony and fire sacrifice, a multimedia show depicting the life, achievements and teachings of the founder/guru; talks on the Unity in Diversity theme by scholars, dignitaries and spiritual leaders; a Festival of India; remembrances and homages by devotees and friends, and of course the usual sumptuous feasting we are known for."
