Handle The Jandal

Handle The Jandal

The coveted Golden Jandal statuettes are being polished and shined in preparation for this country’s top DIY music video competition, the Radio Active Handle the Jandal NZ Music Awards.

The awards ceremony at Wellington’s classy Embassy Theatre in September will feature 15 finalists, whittled down from 58 entries, vying for top honours across six categories; Best use of exploitative tactics to promote band, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Concept, Best Animation and Rising Star.

Audience participation on the night will nail the seventh golden flip flop category, the Favourite Handle The Jandal Video award winner and two runner ups.

Radio Active 89FM launched the awards, honouring our most innovative, inspired and truly magical independent music videos, five years ago. At that time, there were few public screening opportunities for the underdog, number eight wire, and independent music video. Today, local television and the film industry have embraced homegrown music videos and a Golden Jandal is a golden calling card for emerging directors.

Richard Shaw, Concept category winner 2003 says “It’s such a great event and shows people you don’t need a lot of money. It’s always the good ideas that count. It’s pretty amazing how all of a sudden there’s all these animated videos out there from small and up coming bands with next to nothing budgets.”

Sam Buys, 1st runner up for favourite music video 2003 says “Winning last year was a real shock. The fact that we won an audience award gave me a real shot in the arm and made me think, Yeah I am on the right path to making good entertainment!”

A bonus for all finalists is the chance to see their work up on the big screen. Ned Wenlock, second runner up in 2003 with Rhian Sheehan’s An Afternoon on the Moon, “Normally you only see music videos at on TV but it was just great to be sitting there with a huge group of talented and supportive people on the night.”

Premier sponsors for the Radio Active Handle The Jandal Music Video awards this year are Krafthaus, Red Bull, Puma, Playstation 2, Centre for Creative Industries at Weltec, The Film Equipment Company, Nektar, Dubshop, The Film School, Protel and Sony DVCAM, Tuatara Brewery, Montana, and Positively Wellington Business who is backing the Rising Star award.

The newly formed partnership with the regional economic development agency guarantees the Rising Star winner up to $5000 worth of business planning and development, mentoring and networking opportunities.

Creative Sector Manager Chris Lipscombe says, “Positively Wellington Business is delighted to be supporting Handle the Jandal, and congratulates Radio Active on organising the event.

“Their brainchild both enriches and supports New Zealand’s music industry. Music videos are increasingly a primary marketing tool for brands. Encouraging innovation and imagination in this area can only be good for the industry”.
