Maori Arts Group Travel To Dubai

On Monday 10th January Kare Rata of Ngati Wai, will travel to Dubai as the Maori face representing Indigenous arts from Aotearoa at the World Global shopping festival in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Dubai festival will be attended by over 46 country pavillions.

Kare Rata who is a senior manager in Aotearoa House is organising the Maori section of the South Pacific Indigenous Pavillion.

A wide cross section of arts and mediums will be displayed, including the classic, pounamu, harakeke, kakahu, music, from a wide range of artists across Aotearoa.

The overseer of the Dubai Festival is the Crown Prince of Dubai. The major sponsors are United Emirate Airlines. An estimated 170,000 persons attend, daily! 60% of the visitors visit from Europe.

This is the first time a Maori presence will be at Dubai. The festival runs from the 12th of January to the 31st of March. The response from Maori artists to participate in the Dubai festival has been very positive.

Without the support of small Maori businesses and supporting artists, this opportunity would have been another missed. However to date there has been little support from established organisations supposedly set-up to assist Maori economic development.
