Everyone wants to sculpt New Zealand

NEWS RELEASE 02 Feb 2005

From Bulgaria to Scotland, everyone wants to sculpt New Zealand!

Coming all the way from Scotland, Andrew Vermeersch says the sound of a sculpture symposium in New Zealand inspired him – to carve with New Zealand stone and to see the country! “It’s a long way to come, but worth every mile to experience the kiwi culture and get to sculpt with some of the best in the country” he says. Selected from a number of overseas applicants, Andrew and Bulgarian sculptor Rado Sultov add to the mix of local and national sculptors gracing Ilott Green on 12-20th February at the Soft As Stone Sculpture Symposium.

Symposium organizer Ceedee Doyle says she wants ‘the event to draw more international sculptors and international art-lovers to New Zealand. It’s a great opportunity for our top sculptors to exchange ideas and techniques as well as spread the word about New Zealand sculpture.’ The event is part of the WCC Meridian Energy Summer City calendar of free events and expected to draw large numbers of visitors over the 9-day period. ‘The waterfront symposium is one of the events people usually pop in to see.’ This year the event will culminate with an auction of many of the works where members of the public will be able to bid for the pieces they like.

Coming from the Northern hemisphere to the summer down under is another added attraction for the international artists. Andrew shivers, ‘It’s snowing in Scotland and cold. I’m on my way and loving every step I take!’.
