Stephen Fleming takes the lead in Walter Lawrence Trophy in UK

The Black Caps’ and Nottinghamshire's new captain Stephen Fleming has taken the lead for the 2005 Walter Lawrence Trophy with his 98-ball hundred against Sussex at Trent Bridge yesterday.

The New Zealand skipper scored 111, reaching his century in 143 minutes with a six and 16 fours to overtake Andy Flower's previous fastest for the season by seven balls.

Last year’s winner Richard Johnson, was presented with the trophy, by Tom Graveney, for his century off 63 balls for Somerset, at Riverside, against Durham, August 16. Previous winners of the award were also presented with silver medallions to celebrate their achievements and the Trophy’s 70th anniversary.

This year’s winner will be presented with the trophy and a cheque for £5000 from Aon Ltd., the trophy’s supporters, in a ceremonial dinner in the newly refurbished Long Room at Lord’s.

Instituted in 1934, the Walter Lawrence Trophy is awarded to the batsman who scores the fastest century, off the fewest balls received, in first-class cricket each season.

Other previous winners include Ken Rutherford, Chris Cairns, Darren Lehmann, Ian Harvey, Matthew Fleming, Gary Sobers, Gordon Greenidge, Alan Knott, Mike Procter, Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Mike Gatting, Graeme Hick and Andy Flintoff.
