The Kauri Museum will revive the art of woodworking throughout the month of June, celebrating Matariki with this traditional Maori skill.

Live demonstrations will run from the 22nd to the 25th of June with the exhibition on display in the museum until the 13th of July.

A competition for the best piece made by lathe, hand tools and the best walking stick will also be held over the course of the exhibition.

Nik Hendriksen of The Kauri Museum says the local iwi are very excited about the displays and competition as a means of demonstrating this ancient skill.

“It is exciting to be able to wave our local cultural flag proudly and to celebrate our Maori culture,” he says.

Woodworking skills were used for the construction of waka as well as traditional whare, panels within the meeting houses and a variety of other uses.
