Wellington Artist Wins Prestigious Award

Wellington artist Lorraine Rastorfer, has won the Centre of Contemporary Art / Anthony Harper Contemporary Art Award, announced in Christchurch last night. The judges, Dr Richard Bullen and Margaret Duncan, said they were "significantly impressed and enamoured" with the work which they chose from 180 entries and 70 finalists.
Rastorfer, a senior lecturer in visual arts at the Wellington Institute of Technology's Centre of Creative Industries received the $6000.00 first prize for her 1900mm x 1200mm abstract painting called Organising Principles.
Rastorfer describes her work as part of an ongoing investigation into painting as layering, in concept and process. "My painting process requires a large amount of faith since it is not until the final layer is applied that I can see whether the combination has produced something more than the sum of its parts".
Two highly commended awards went to Paul Ogier and Caroline Morton.
