A West Side Story Comes to Auckland
A West Side Story Comes to Auckland For one night only 16 June
90 musicians from the West Coast of America’s Stanford University Orchestra will stage a phenomenal free concert in Auckland this week.
They arrive in Auckland on Tuesday 14 June.
On Thursday 16 June they perform at the Cathedral in a free concert at 7.30pm
The Conductor, Jindong Cai, studied under Leonard Bernstein and he always programs one of the Master’s works on any major international tour. This time it is the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. The program also includes: Stravinsky’s Firebird, a NZ premiere of a new work, a contemporary Chinese American work featuring the striking Taiko drums and of course Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
Jindong and his wife Sheila Melvin (also on tour with the group) are leading world authorities on the amazing history of Western music in China having written the definitive book on the subject: Rhapsody in Red.
