Take-a-Seat with a sculptural difference!

Hokitika’s art events group Artzfeva announces entries are now open for the new, intriguing sculptural design competition Take-a-Seat. The Take-a-Seat public art project began in January with the unveiling of the first seat on Hokitika’s beachfront, and aims to unveil the second one next January.

Artzfeva Co-ordinator, Jo Kearns, says: “there’s lots to do between now and then! There are the entries to receive and judge so the top three designs can be chosen and the public favourite from those becomes the commissioned winner, and Hokitika’s next sculpture. The intention is to build a sculptural walkway so locals and visitors can sit in our awesome outdoor spaces and appreciate both the stunning natural backdrop of the alps, Mt Cook and the sea, as well as artistic sculpture.”

While the competition calls for a seat, entries may be designed as a seat, or as a sculpture with a seat as well. The site has been chosen, in an area strong in heritage values, and it is likely sculptures will connect with this theme. The first seat was designed and constructed by local artist Veronika Maser, and she sees this as an opportunity to bring design ideas from around New Zealand into the emerging arts community of Hokitika: “It will be great to see contemporary art and designs from all over the country here in Westland, and potentially as a long-term sculpture.”

Entries close on 31st August so check it out today! Work on your design as an individual or with a group and see if your creativity stands up with New Zealand’s best in contemporary design, while putting your design forward to become a part of Hokitika’s landscape for years to come.
