Saturday night racing at The Dogs

Greyhound Racing New Zealand will launch its new Saturday night racing events during August in Wanganui and Manukau, Auckland. The Saturday events are a first for the greyhound racing code and recognises the growth of the sport during the last year.

The first four Saturday night racing events will be held at Wanganui on Saturday 6 and 27 August 2005 and Manukau, Auckland on Saturday 13 and 20 August 2005. Four Saturday night events will also be held in July 2006.

GRNZ's chief executive Lance Bickford says that these Saturday night racing spots are usually reserved for the more dominant racing codes - harness and gallops.

"Greyhound racing has gone from strength to strength during the last year. The achievement of gaining eight of the top spots out of the racing calendar is just the start of our strategy to give greyhound enthusiasts greater opportunities to enjoy our sport," he said.

"As we continue to move greyhound racing towards a greater entertainment focus, Saturday evening racing will be a dominant feature. Already in Wanganui and Manukau, we have had great interest from Saturday afternoon sports groups who are looking for a warm, comfortable and friendly atmosphere for after match refreshments - as well as the added bonus of some action-packed greyhound racing," Mr Bickford said.

The events will start around 5.30 pm and continue until about 8.30pm.

"We would like to encourage those in Wanganui, Manukau and surrounding areas, who haven't experienced a night of greyhound racing, to come along and give it a go," said Mr Bickford.

The first event takes place next Saturday, 6 August 2005 at Hatrick Raceway in Wanganui.
