South African Archbishop to speak at St Matthew-in-the-City

On Sunday 14th August at 10am, St Matthew-in-the-City is privileged to welcome the Most Rev Njongonkulu Ndungane, Archbishop of Cape Town, and Primate of the Province of Southern Africa, who will speak at the morning service.

Archbishop Ngundane, who succeeded Desmond Tutu, is a significant leader in the worldwide Anglican Church.

The Archbishop spent three years incarcerated on Robben Island. His experiences there so affected his religious beliefs that he decided to follow family tradition and become a priest. On his release in 1966, he trained for the ministry.

He has worked in parishes in South Africa and England. While in England, he read for bachelors and masters degrees in theology at King’s College, London, of which he is a fellow.

He has published a considerable number of theological works on the Christian view of human rights and the concept of a “just war”.

Before becoming Archbishop, he was the Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman and, before that, principal of the Anglican Theological College in Umtata.

Archbishop Ngundane is prominent in the global struggle against AIDS. He is also the only African Primate to be supportive of gay rights.
