Mountain Bike Section Included In Annual Secondary School Multisport Champs

It may be Election Day, but there will be more than politics on the mind multisporters involved in the ASB New Zealand Secondary Schools Multisport Championships this Saturday.

More than 200 athletes are expected to compete in the sixth annual event, run by Community Sport Trust with support from Triathlon Tauranga.

This year the venue has been moved from the Wairoa River Bridge to McLarens Falls Park and will, for the first time, include a mountain bike section in addition to the traditional road bike.

The day will start with the kayak section, with the water flow being reduced on Lake McLaren. Kayaking will be followed by a road bike on McLarens Falls Road or a mountain bike ride through the wildlife park. These sections will be followed by a trail run which takes in the river's edge.

The event is held in three sections, boys and girls - junior, intermediate and senior with the juniors starting first at 9.30am.

All sections are run over the same course but are at varying distances.

Community Sport Trust director Iris Thomas says more colleges have come onboard this year with New Plymouth Boys High, Nelson College and Taupo entering teams.

The Whakatane area, hosts of the Motu Challenge, has entered thirteen teams.

Names to watch for are highly ranked Odette Sceats (Gisborne Girls High), last year's winner Ryan Sissons (McLeans College), local Sam Lake (Mount College) and the Rangitoto Ironmen team.

This event has seen a number of triathlon achievers over the years, with Terrenzo Bozzone competing a number of times, as well as Josh Dyer from Bethlehem College.
