Jazz Legends to Rock Norfolk Island

Jazz Legends to Rock Norfolk Island

Jazz legends Don Burrows and James Morrison will 'sax up' Norfolk Island together this December when they star in the biggest-ever Jazz in the Pines Festival.

Supporting Burrows and Morrison is popular Kiwi group Swing Out band.

The veteran Aussie virtuosos and their saxophones are offering a smorgasboard of jazz on the tiny island during the December 5-9 festival.

Highlights include two concerts featuring all the jazz bands as well as Burrows and Morrison together on stage under a giant marquee amongst the island's trademark pines.

The pair promises to treat the audience to memorable evenings of classic swing, gentle Brazilian bossa nova and exciting modern jazz.

Other supporting acts include the Joe Chindamo Trio, guitarist Bruce Matheski, Steve Taylor-Brown and the Rick Robertson Quartet.

One of Australia's official Living National Treasures, Don Burrows began his musical career at the age of two by banging up a syncopated storm on his parents' pots and has been at the forefront of the jazz world for most of his 61 years in the business.

Still going strong at the age of 76, the 'father' of Australian jazz has won international acclaim as a composer and multi-instrumentalist, playing the flute, clarinet and saxophone.

His equally famous protégé Morrison, 42, began his musical journey when he was given a trumpet at age seven. He fell in love with it but quickly mastered all other wind instruments, performing his first professional gig at the age of 13.
