Kiwi Punters Win Big Money on World Cup Bets

Kiwi rugby union punters have taken Australian online bookmaker Centrebet to the cleaners.

Centrebet has paid out more than $100,000 to New Zealanders who gambled at long odds on their country beating Japan and South Africa in the contest to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The Kiwi bid was 21.00 with Centrebet at the beginning of November but betting closed with it quoted at 4.50 after New Zealanders participated in a late, patriotic plunge on the outsider.

"No-one saw it coming except Centrebet's Kiwi punters whose wagers went against everything that was said or written about how the vote would go," says Gerard Daffy. "Good luck to them."

The All Blacks are 2.25 with Centrebet to kick off the 2011 Rugby World Cup as the defending champions, while they are 1.12 to beat current title holder England at Twickenham tomorrow.

New Zealand's rugby league side is 4.00 to win the 2005 Tri Nations but 6.50 to miss the final.
