Entries Open for Annual Routeburn Classic Adventure Run

Domestic and international athletes are now invited to enter the third Routeburn Classic Adventure Run, scheduled for 13 May 2006.

The Routeburn Classic began in 2002 to provide a challenging and original event, giving competitors the opportunity to run in one of New Zealand’s World Heritage Areas and National Parks.

The 38km alpine adventure run passes through some of the most amazing scenery that New Zealand’s South Island has to offer. Competitors will run on part of the famous Routeburn Track covering narrow tracks up mountains, descents alongside forests and crossing shallow rivers.

Now set to be an annual event, Routeburn Classic Event Director Evan McWhirter has secured a Department of Conservation concession for the next four years, with rights to renew.

“I’m really stoked to get this year’s race in place. It’s really satisfying to give athletes the chance to get out there amongst the fiords and untouched forests. To keep safety in check, we’ve got a limit of 225 places so this really is a ‘must do’event for the passionate adventure runner.”

The previous two Routeburn Classic events were won by Coast to Coast champion Richard Ussher, but with categories for Peak Performers (18-39 yr), Masters (40-49 yr), Legends (50-59 yr) and Gurus (60+), there’s everything to run for.

Online and postal entries are being accepted now. The entry fee is $95 with a closing date of 25 April. There will be a late fee for all entries received between 26 April and the cut-off point of 8 May.
