Four New Zealand artists - Lana McArdle, Janine Earles, Richard Robinson, and Tanya Blong – were announced as prize winners at the Wheeler Campbell Emerging Art Awards Evening held in Wellington on 28 February.
The Emerging Art Awards were set up by Wheeler Campbell, a recruitment and human resources service provider, to strengthen relationships between arts and business, and increase recognition for artists at the beginning of their careers.
“We are a country renown for our creative and innovative talent. The Emerging Art Awards grew out of our desire to highlight the economic and social value of the arts while providing support to our local community,” says Rob Borgers, Director of Wheeler Campbell. “The Emerging Art Awards provided a forum to bring our clients and artists together, and a great deal of energetic discussion occurred at the Awards Evening!”
Wellington artist Lana McArdle, who won First Prize says “My feet are finally back on the ground and I spent much of the next day receiving congratulatory emails, texts and phone calls. It’s a great feeling and I’m really grateful and excited about the opportunities this has created for me.”
Submissions for the Awards were received from as far wide as Ruakaka in Northland and Invercargill in Southland. As well as paintings, prints, and photography, such diverse mediums as wallpaper on wooden blinds by Bronwyn Russell and paving paint and bitumen by Lynsie Austin were received.
From the dozens of submissions, finalists were selected by an arts-specialist panel. The winners were displayed on the Wheeler Campbell website and the public invited to vote on-line for their favourite artworks.
All artworks were for sale on the night with 70% going to the artist and 30% to an artist-nominated charity. Charities receiving a percentage of sales include Women’s Refuge, Save the Children, and Pablos.
