Family Life International praises CanWest’s
public admission that it was wrong to broadcast the Bloody
Mary episode of South Park.
It was courageous of them to apologise for screening this highly offensive program and to assure New Zealand that they will not be screening this episode again.
The campaign and today’s apology from CanWest demonstrates that the concerns of many New Zealanders about the offensive nature of Bloody Mary were legitimate and well founded.
It also demonstrates that we can have a positive effect on the type of content broadcast in New Zealand if we are prepared to exercise legitimate and peaceful means of protest in order to have our voices heard by large media corporations.
Our hope is that CanWest will consult widely in regards to the commitment that it has made today to review its internal processes for handling programmes containing religious satire.
We look forward to hearing more about a permanent CanWest policy in regards to broadcasting this type of material.
