She looks so pale… She looks as though she has risen from the grave!

Canterbury Opera’s show stopping Lucia di Lammermoor came to an abrupt halt tonight, as the audience waited for the curtain to go up for the third act.

Coloratura Soprano Amanda Pabyan in the lead role of Lucia was taken ill during the interval suffering from low blood sugar, her blood pressure had fallen away. After a short interlude and an announcement from Canterbury Opera’s CEO Elizabeth Owens, the show continued with Amanda Pabyan returning to the stage for one of the most celebrated moments on the opera stage the famous mad scene.

With an ambulance standing by the surtitles read: she looks so pale… she looks as though she has risen from the grave, as Amanda Pabyan appeared in her bloodied wedding gown and sang the mad scene to rapturous applause from a supportive and appreciative audience. What a trooper, this young artist gave real meaning to the phrase – the show must go on - and took her bows to a standing ovation.
