Squeegee Bandit Nominated for Top Digital Film Award

After a successful world premiere at the Telecom 38th Auckland International Film Festival, SQUEEGEE BANDIT has now been nominated as a finalist in the 2006 Air New Zealand Screen Awards. The Awards are New Zealand’s premiere film and television industry awards event, the NZ industry’s equivalent to the Oscars.

Squeegee Bandit is a feature documentary film that follows nine months in the life and struggles of Starfish, a Mäori window washer from South Auckland.

Director/producer Sándor Lau and producer Rhonda Kite are nominated for Best Digital Feature for their recently completed film. "We could have made our film ten times over for the publicity budget of many other films. We want to use this opportunity to maximize our exposure and make sure this story we’ve put two years of our passion and love into gets widely seen," says Lau. "What other chance will people have to see a true story from the frontlines of South Auckland?"

Rhonda Kite feels honoured and excited to be nominated. "In many ways we’ve made a subversive film that talks about a lot of home truths, especially the collateral damage of the colonisation of Mäori people. This is a story all New Zealanders should see."

Sándor Lau has also been nominated for Best Technical Contribution to a Digital Feature for his work as the film’s cinematographer and editor. www.squeegeebandit.com
